Recently Burger King in the United States announced that it would phase-out the use of pig products from facilities using sow stalls and eggs from caged hens, instead sourcing products from stall-free and cage-free suppliers. This decision has been internationally applauded. Burger King is aware that, by making this decision, it will encourage farmers to move into more humane egg and meat production, therefore increasing the availability of such products. I note that, in McDonald's' 'World-wide Corporate Responsibility Report', the guiding principles for responsible purchasing state that 'McDonald's supports that animals should be free from cruelty, abuse and neglect while embracing the proper treatment of animals and addressing animal welfare issues'. Australians are concerned by the cruelty inflicted on pigs and hens in factory-farms in this country. I therefore urge McDonald's to announce a similar phase-out of the use of cruelly-produced meat and egg products in its product rage. I am appalled that governments here still permit these animal production methods under the guise of industry 'welfare' Codes of Practice. Were McDonald's to take the lead in Australia and phase-out cruelly produced meat products, it would encourage animal industries in this country to change to more welfare-friendly methods of production, with a 'phase in' of products could occur in Australia in line with increased availability. Such an initiative would directly improve the lives of millions of animals in Australia and be applauded by the Australian community and consumers.
